Unidentified Photographer (France)
Among the Irises
Autochrome, May 28, 1924. 5 x 4 inches

This dazzling display of irises immediately brings to mind the famous garden of Claude Monet at Giverny. Monet’s garden provided subject matter for hundreds of his paintings, including several notable compositions featuring irises. In fact, Monet was still alive and painting (at the age of 84) when this Autochrome was made. While the exact location of this image is unknown, it is said to have been taken near the French city of Tours.
