As Alfred Stieglitz enthusiastically attested, the Autochrome process was capable of more than truthful rendering of colors: it also offered “…wonderful luminosity of the shadows, that bug-bear of the photographer in monochrome (and an) endless range of grays.” Here, the veteran amateur photographer Harry T. Shriver has utilized these capabilities in an image that captures the subtle unsaturated colors of a snowy, overcast day.
