Photography as a Fine ARF! — American Museum of Photography
Unidentified Photographer (U.S.): Patriotic Pooch Albumen carte de visite, circa 1862
Dating from the time of the American Civil War, the negative for this photograph would have been made with the collodion process, known as “wet-plate”. The exposure likely required several seconds, a long time to hold this difficult (but stirringly patriotic) pose. Had the pooch moved, he would have appeared as a blur in the finished photograph. The only movement visible, however, is at the end of the flag.
