Of Bricks & Light: Details and Glimpses
Unidentified photographer, possibly Carlo Ponti (Italy): Palazzo Gussoni, Venice, with Gondola. Albumen print, 7-3/4″ x 10″, circa 1875
This image was selected not just for the elegant construction of the palazzo, in a style known as Lombardesque, but also for the irresistible detail of the gondola and its two occupants. The figures seem oblivious to the ancient carvings on the building we’re examining –giving this photograph the sense of a stolen glance.
