Shotaro Shimomura, The Seine, Paris – The American Museum of Photography: Masterworks

Shotaro Shimomura XXI (Japan: 1883-1944): “A Morning at the Bank of the Seine, Paris, France”
Silver-Gelatine Print, 6 x 8 inches, 1934/5
Shimomura was the president of a Japanese department store chain and a talented amateur photographer. He exhibited his work in photographic “Salons,” which were a mainstay of creative photography in many countries during the 1930s through the 1950s.
Shimomura’s work blends the influences of pictorialism and modernism which were cross-currents during the 1930s. This image, with the Eiffel Tower rendered in ethereal tones, is an example of the superb design sense that infuses his photographs.
The American Museum of Photography is pleased to present an exhibition of Shimomura’s photographs, An Eye for the World.
