The magazine on the floor is “The Photographic Times” for September 12, 1890. A bound volume of this periodical is on the table. The masthead of the newspaper on the floor reads “Congregational News.”
The photographer’s identification has been pencilled on the back of the card in an unknown hand; there is no printed identification of the studio present.
What’s going on in this picture? Who is this person and why has the photographer not only chosen to portray him as dozing off, but posted a sign to that effect?
