Unidentified Photographer (U.S.): A Chat Daguerreotype, sixth-plate size (2.55 x 3.25 inches), circa 1850
Half of the original leather case for this image has survived; it matches the gold-tooled case held by the older woman in the image. This animated scene provides delightful evidence that not all early photographs were somber affairs.
