First published in 2004, “Untitled (Knight)” is a tapestry of ideas, tightly woven together. In it, Scott Mutter explores familiar issues of faith and its tangible representations. The shield, fashioned from a church’s stained-glass window, seems to protect the figure from unseen forces lurking in a threatening landscape. But does the divine light emanating from the shield come from inside the church, or from within the knight? Or could it be a heavenly glow, reflected (or even deflected) as it glances off the shield?
