Elementary Classroom

Unidentified Photographer (U. S.)

A rare glimpse inside a school classroom from the 1870s, this photograph was probably not meant as a class picture–since not all of the students can be clearly seen. The woman sitting at the back of the room (just to the left of the pillar) may be the teacher. Because the children appear to be of varying ages, this could be the interior of a one-room schoolhouse.
