Unidentified photographer (U.S.): Light House at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Cyanotype, 7-3/8″ x 9-1/2″, circa 1900.
A beautiful study from a series of American lighthouse views. While the presence of a surveyor (before the outbuilding at right) suggests the photographs were made as part of a systematic study of the lighthouse service, the photograph’s evocative composition goes beyond mere cataloguing–with an open gate and a welcoming figure in the doorway.
In fine condition. $2200

James Anderson (1813-1877): “Arch of Septimus Severus, northern aspect with columns of Temple of Vespasian.” Albumen print, circa 1857, 12″ x 15-3/4″.
Anderson was an English painter who moved to Rome in 1838 and opened his own photography studio by 1853. His first catalogue of photographs was published in 1859. The title for the image above appears in a later list of Anderson’s works, now in the print room of the Rijksmuseum.
The mount bears the blindstamp of James Spithöver, a bookseller who was James Anderson’s sales agent.
Fine condition with strong tones, slightly lighter in places at the periphery. $2200.
