“Watch the birdie!”

Harris Studio, Lena, Illinois (active 1889 – 1893)

The Stephenson County Historical Society lists a Harris photography studio in Lena, 1889- 1890 and 1892-3.

However, the listing, based on Freeport, Illinois city directories, identifies the photographer as “F. L. Harris,” while the monogram on this cabinet card’s mount seems to read “J F H”.

A closer look at the “birdie,” whose tail seems to face the camera. Could this be a live bird on a perch?
