A Winter Gallery – American Museum of Photography (SM)
![]() |
For many of us, Winter is a perfect season for staying indoors and looking at photographs. But it’s also a time of year with wonderful picturesque qualities– flying snowflakes swirling in the air and icy trees giving off a crystalline glint. Because early techniques made it especially difficult to photograph outdoors in cold weather, photographers began creating elaborate winter portraits inside their studios–eventually adding special effects that gave the appearance of snowflakes. This gallery contains a brief selection of winter images, showing the season at its most beautiful and most biting.
