Of Bricks & Light: Grand Vistas
B. Riemann, publisher (New Zealand): “Dunedin (North) from the Octagon.” Albumen print, circa 1865 Dunedin was settled in 1848 by Scottish immigrants who planned to call it “New Edinburgh.” Nearby gold strikes swelled the city’s population in the 1860s. The Octagon or city square looks very much like Edinburgh’s Scott Monument, but was built to honor Robert Burns.
While Riemann is listed as the publisher, the photographer of this view is not credited. Among the photographers active in Dunedin during this period were D. L. Mundy,William Meluish, Joseph Perry and Alfred Burton.
